The Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development (CEED) helps students develop the skills they need for their academic studies and beyond. They do this in three main ways:
Develop your academic skills
All undergraduates can use CEED's 1:1 service and make an appointment with one of their PhD tutors to help you improve your study skills (for example, essay writing, note-taking, time management, etc) or maths and stats skills (pure maths, applied maths, statistics). Alternative in-School support is available for students in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Over 300 students make use of this service each year, and CEED also has an ‘ask a tutor’ email service where you can email a quick question to a tutor.
Many Schools also take part in CEED's Academic Skills Project, where PhD students deliver discipline-specific workshops and resources locally for undergraduates. Look out for publicity if your School is taking part.
Develop your professional skills
CEED and Careers deliver the Saints Skills Awards, which are open to all students. Two awards are offered: Saints Skills Builder Award and Saints Skills Spotlight Award. The awards can be taken by any student, undergraduate and postgraduate, and in any year of study. You can opt to take one award or both. If both, the awards can be taken in any order. You can draw on a range of experiences and activities whilst undertaking an award or awards.
The Saints Skills Builder Award is for students who want to strengthen and develop a range of skills by undertaking varied activities. It is based around the University’s 20 graduate attributes, which comprise the knowledge, skills and capabilities that the University seeks to give all students the opportunity to develop throughout their time at St Andrews.
The Saints Skills Spotlight Award is for students who wish to develop the ability to articulate their skills and attributes to access targeted employment or further study opportunities. To gain an award you must successfully navigate each stage of a mock recruitment process which consists of:
- The submission of a CV and cover letter tailored towards an opportunity of your choosing.
- The recording of a video interview.
Develop your IT skills
CEED runs a programme of IT workshops for undergraduate students, including sessions on digital wellbeing, using apps to help you learn, and curating digital content. You also have the opportunity to self-study and sit exams for a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certificate which is a globally recognised IT qualification. Taking part in MOS is free of charge for students at St Andrews, something that’s not normally the case in other universities.
For more information on any of these initiatives, visit CEED.

CEED (the Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development) helps students develop the skills they need for their academic studies and beyond. They do this via four strands of a programme called MSkills, which taught postgraduates can access via St Leonard’s College.
Make the most of your time in St Andrews
CEED recognises that it’s important for Masters students to integrate quickly and hit the ground running. To help with this, CEED offers a number of Masters sessions in the first few weeks of the semester, including welcome events, and an introduction to ‘mastersness’ and critical thinking workshops.
Get help throughout your course
All Masters students can use CEED's 1:1 service and make an appointment with one of their PhD tutors to help improve their study skills (for example, essay writing, note taking, time management etc) or maths and stats skills (pure maths, applied maths, statistics). Alternative in-School support is available for students in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. CEED also will be running a series of dissertation writing workshops and a ‘dissertation bootcamp’ in the summer. Masters students are also welcome to join the PhD-led writers’ group which meets regularly all through the year. It offers a supportive group environment for studying and writing.
