Biography

Dr Jasmine Gani is Senior Lecturer in the School of International Relations and Co-Director of the Centre for Syrian Studies at the University of St Andrews. Her research focuses on western empires in the Middle East and Asia; anti-colonial history and political thought;  Ideologies and social movements; and the coloniality of knowledge production in IR.

Her recent articles include Anti-colonial Connectivity between Islamicate Movements in the Middle East and South Asia; Racial Militarism and Civilisational Anxiety at the Imperial Encounter; and Orientalist discourse and policy in the west after the Arab Uprisings. She co-edited the 100th Anniversary Special Issue of International Affairs (with Jenna Marshall) and her next book project focuses on imperialist ideology in US-Syrian relations.

Dr Gani has a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics. She has been a visiting scholar at Georgetown University and post-doctoral fellow at the LSE. She is member of the national QAA Advisory Group for politics and International Relations. She sits on the editorial board of the journal International Affairs and was an editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies (vol. 39). Within the University, she is a member of the Institution Race Equality Group, the Refugee and Forced Migration Network, the Centre for Conflict and Peace Studies, and the Institute for Middle East and Central Asia Studies.   • Sectarianisation and securitisation of the uprisings in Syria and Bahrain
  • British colonialism and racialisation of national identity and migration in the Gulf
  • Dislocation and resettlement of indigenous communities in the US
  • Coloniality of knowledge production and anti-colonial thought in British Malaya
  • Race, citizenship, and exclusion in British media and political discourse
  • Racial and Nationalist Exclusion and Belonging of Syrian diaspora in Turkey and Germany
  • Coloniality of NGO engagement with Arab diaspora in Scotland

Research areas

  • Research interests: US & European empires in the Middle East and Asia; anti-colonial history & political thought; US-Syrian Relations
  • Current Projects: coloniality in postcolonial states; imperialist ideology in US policy towards Syria; Islamic anti-colonialism; Decolonising methodology; International Affairs 100th Anniversary special issue.
